Teddy, a three-year-old goldendoodle, suffered a fracture leg when he got out of his house and hit by a car on March 25, the MSPCA reports. When Teddy's owners learned he could take months to recover, they decided to surrender him.

“We understand and respect the owners’ decision, and are hopeful that we can give Teddy the care he needs that will allow us to find him a new family,” MSPCA-Angell Director of Adoption Centers and Programs, Mike Keiley said.

More than three weeks later, Teddy's leg is still in a splint and while it is too early to tell, staff fear that his leg could be amputated.

“We’re changing the splint and bandages weekly and reassessing,” explained Dr. Wendy Huang, a shelter veterinarian at the MSPCA’s Boston Adoption Center. “We’ll take more x-rays in a few weeks that will help us determine the best course of action.”

Despite being treated for a major injury, MSPCA staff say Teddy's morale has stayed high.

“Teddy’s moving around well with the splint, and he’s incredibly sweet,” Huang said. “When he spends time with us in the office, he’s well behaved and friendly. He’ll be a wonderful pet when he’s ready to find his new home.”

MPSCA staff say that while Teddy still has a long way to go in his recovery, they are hoping one family will take him in and help nurse him back to health.

The family should be able to bring Teddy to his weekly appointments at an MSPCA shelter to change his bandages and check to make sure he is healing properly.

Shelter staff also say that Teddy is a sweet and friendly dog who would fit well in many different homes. Those interested in fostering-to-adopt can go online.
